Position
Delaware Humanities seeks an emerging, enthusiastic humanities professional to serve as a Culture, Community, and Museums Specialist working with our small staff to advance the humanities throughout the First State. Offered in collaboration with the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, Delaware Humanities and the Delaware Museum Association, this 1-year full-time position may continue if funding permits and will focus on providing capacity-building workshops, networking opportunities, and advocacy coordination for small to mid-sized humanities organizations and museums from all three of Delaware’s counties.
We seek a highly organized and motivated leader with a passion for understanding the ways humanities organizations explore, collect, document, and share items representing the human experience. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, work well both with a team and independently, and manage time and resources efficiently.
The primary objective of this position is to build the capacity, network, and visibility of history, culture, and museum organizations throughout Delaware. Working with board members of the Delaware Museum Association and staff members of Delaware Humanities, the position will create enrichment and connection opportunities for organizations that serve as hubs of culture, collections, stories, and information for their communities. This position reports to the Executive Director of Delaware Humanities and works with and is supported by the staff of Delaware Humanities.
Individual Responsibilities
- Coordinate, with Delaware Museum Association Program Committee, Delaware Museum Association Annual Meeting and Conference in fall.
- Coordinate at least 1 museum-focused workshop and 2 general humanities-focused workshops in identified skill-building areas.
- Coordinate a spring 2022 state advocacy event for humanities organizations and Delaware Humanities grantees throughout the state.
- Coordinate spring and fall connection-building networking events to accompany grant application writing workshop serving all counties for Delaware Museum Association members and Delaware Humanities subcontractors as well as grantees and partners.
- Participate in bi-monthly meetings of the Delaware Museum Association board and provide support to Delaware Museum Association committees.
- Participate in quarterly meetings with Delaware Humanities, Delaware Museum Association, and Historical and Cultural Affairs representatives and prepare a written report on each quarter’s activities.
- Manage day-to-day operating activities of the Delaware Museum Association and coordinate daily financial tasks.
- Manage and promote membership in the Delaware Museum Association and coordinate communications for members via website, promotional materials, social media, etc.
- Attend at least 2 Delaware Humanities grant events each quarter and engage with grantees and participants.
- Help represent Delaware Humanities by tabling at local festivals with staff and/or board members.
- Participate in research projects potentially related to assessing Delaware’s history, culture, and museum communities and coordinating large grant projects for the greater humanities community.
- Assist in general duties as directed.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree is required for this position, and a master’s degree in a humanities field or with a museum studies certification is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, basic web and social media platforms (FB, IG, Twitter, etc.)
- Enthusiasm for working with diverse and underserved communities (BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, rural, and more)
- Experience working within a museum, historic site, or historical society is beneficial, but not required.
