2024 So Far: Delaware Humanities Highlights

July 8, 2024

Happy summer! Friends like you help Delaware Humanities to offer and support quality humanities programs throughout the state where you live. Consider making a mid-year donation so that we may reach and support as many communities in the second part of the year as we did in the first!

We have been working hard providing programs under the United We Stand initiative coordinated by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts to promote civic engagement, social cohesion, and cross-cultural understanding. As part of this initiative we have hosted three oral history workshops, produced four podcast episodes, trained a team of Conversation Leaders to host Community Conversations, distributed 40 copies of our Brown v. Board of Education exhibit to organizations throughout the state, and have supported over 15 Speaker presentations on Brown v. Board and Jim Crow segregation in health care at schools, libraries and community centers.

In June we concluded our third Prime Time Family Reading series, following a program at New Castle Public Library and a bilingual program at Georgetown Public Library last fall. The spring Prime Time program took place at the Imani Village in Wilmington in partnership with the Culture Restoration Project, Inc. and the Wilmington Public Library. For six weeks, families came together to exercise literacy and critical thinking skills by reading and discussing a variety of children’s books. We have also sponsored 90 Speakers programs at libraries, senior centers, K-12 schools, and community centers across Delaware.

Through our grants program, we have awarded 14 Opportunity Grants totaling $47,036 and six Action and Innovation Grants for a total of $84,300. These have been awarded to organizations in all three counties for projects such as film screenings and panel discussions, documentary productions, exhibits, conferences, lectures, history tours, and more.

Thank you for your support in making these programs happen!
