Press Release: Delaware Humanities Announces Podcast Highlighting Local Leaders in Environment and Agriculture

April 2, 2025

Wilmington, DE – April 2, 2025 – Delaware Humanities is pleased to announce its 2025 podcast series “People & Planet”, produced in partnership with Delaware Public Media.

“People & Planet” is a six-episode podcast series set to air monthly from April to September. The podcast will highlight how Delawareans connect to the natural environments throughout the state. Episodes include interviews with Delaware-based writers, scholars, scientists, and indigenous leaders; and will examine topics such as Delaware’s agricultural practices, indigenous cultures’ connections to the environment, and creative works inspired by nature.

Interviewees include former Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Ed Kee, discussing Delaware’s agricultural history, the importance and impact of sustainable farming, and the future of farming in Delaware; Doug Tallamy, UD Professor of Agriculture and Natural Resources, discussing ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities; and Delaware writer and nature photographer Leslie Hsu Oh (National Geographic, Vogue, Smithsonian magazine), discussing excerpts from her memoir Fireweed, which weaves themes of family, Chinese cultural identity, and the sweeping landscapes of our National Parks, and how the natural world shapes her creative works. Additional interviewees include guests from the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, the Brandywine Zoo, and the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science

“Our environments are a crucial part of the human experience—our relationship to nature forms so much of what we do and think. In this podcast, we wanted to think about those relationships here in our small, coastal state,” says Senior Programs Officer Rebecca Olsen, “Whether it’s activities connected to our farming industry, our beaches, our native animals, or more, so many organizations and individuals in Delaware are engaged in environment-related work that we hope will resonate with listeners who also call Delaware home.”

Since 2018, Delaware Humanities has produced annual podcasts on a wide range of humanities topics. Previous podcast series include “A More Just Delaware”, “2023/1973”, “A Matter of Facts”, and “IDENTITY: Community Perspectives on Delaware’s History”. The 2025 podcast “People & Planet” will be available to stream on dehumanities.org and Soundcloud.com.
