Program: African Americans and the Civil War
This lecture program is 60-75 minutes long. All are welcome!
At first they were not allowed to fight. Then they were and more than 180,000 signed up. This is a presentation on African Americans, free and enslaved, and their role in the Civil War. It examines the challenges they faced and puts a face to soldiers who fought valiantly for the Union cause and freedom.
The Civil War was a defining moment in American history and the experiences and contributions of African Americans were pivotal during that time. In this presentation, we will explore the overlooked roles African Americans played during the war. We will examine the lives of civilians, including those who were forced to aid the Confederacy, and the brave women who supported the Union cause in various capacities. Additionally, we will honor the United States Colored Troops, whose courage and sacrifice helped shape the course of the war and the future of African Americans in this country.
